The Illinois Valley Anti-Drug Coalition began in 2004.  The coalition, which was originally known as the Mayoral Task Force, was called together by Ottawa Mayor Robert M. Eschbach.  Mayor Eschach, after receiving numerous concerns from various Ottawa citizens about teen drug usage, summoned various community members for a meeting at City Hall.  Initially the group consisted of approximately 30 concerned parents, citizens, business leaders, educators, civic organizations and law enforcement officials.

During the initial “Mayor’s Task Force” meetings, concerns were discussed amongst all those assembled about drug usage in our community.  At that time the Ottawa area was receiving negative publicity surrounding teen drug usage leading to an adverse labeling effect on our community.  The Mayor’s Task Force held a series of Town Hall Meetings aimed to inform, educate and partner with the citizens of our community.  After three successful town hall meetings reaching well over a thousand citizens, the group focused on the what’s next.  It was shortly thereafter the group became known as the Illinois Valley Anti Drug Coalition.

During the IVADC’s tenure within our community a lot has been accomplished.  The IVADC has promoted various public awareness campaigns, worked with the youth of Ottawa, sponsored various drug free activities for youths and much much more.  One of largest accomplishments for the group was the establishment of the “Wannabpopular” campaign (www.wannabpopular.com).  The campaign consisted of  a website and various other means of media to distribute a positive message as it relates to teen drug usage.

Presently the coalition continues to strive at remaining visible in the community.  The group regularly meets once a month on the third Thursday of every month at 6:00PM.  Our meetings are held at the Times annex located at 817 Columbus St. in downtown Ottawa.  New members are always welcome.
